International desk — one advisor answers every Provence inquiry

Drive an hour inland and the Riviera's density disappears. Provence proper is the Luberon villages, the countryside around Aix, and the vineyard land between them: plane trees, markets, and houses built to survive August rather than photograph in it. What you buy is different from the coast in kind, not just in price. A mas or a bastide comes with land — olives, vines, a courtyard, outbuildings — and usually with a restoration history you will want examined properly. Views are of hills and hedgerows, not water. The trade is straightforward: you give up the sea and the airport run, and you get space, privacy and a house that works as a full-time home rather than a summer one.
